A State of Origin for aged care indoor bowls competition

Two local aged care homes are creating a State of Origin of their own holding an inter-home indoor bowls competition with residents now training for the deciding round.

Bolton Clarke aged care homes The Terraces at Varsity Lakes and Raffles at Tweed Heads have been fierce competition for one another since the newly formed competition began.

“The idea of an inter-home bowls competition was something we had long wanted for residents but it wasn’t until we heard about The Terraces ongoing comp that we got involved,” Raffles Lifestyle Co-ordinator Linda said.

“The feedback from residents has been nothing short of positive and it’s brought about companionship between the resident.

“Our training sessions have become an important part of the weekly schedule and has given everyone something to look forward to.

“My hope for the future is to expand the competition to other homes and encourage residents to keep moving because there are so many benefits, both physically and mentally.”

For The Terraces resident Glenda, the competition has been a great way to make new friends and try her hand at indoor bowls for the first time.

“I was a tennis player but my parents and sister played lawn bowls so maybe it’s in my blood!” she said.

“I never thought I’d be coming here and playing bowls competitively – my husband and I have only been at The Terraces for six months.

“We have had a good competition with Raffles so far and it’s been overall a wonderful experience for everybody.”
