Aged care a job worth a lifetime of thanks

Aged Care Employee Day_Frank_.jpg

Clocking in for almost 41 years to the day this Aged Care Employee Day, Bolton Clarke Walkerville aged care team member Frank says a career in aged care is worth every minute.

Frank started at Walkerville in a temporary role as an Assistant Nurse on 24th August 1983, and loved the role so much that he has stayed for four decades.

“In the beginning, there were aspects that are obviously totally different to what it is today but we would read the newspaper to the residents, help them write letters to their families and take them shopping or down to the beach for fish and chips,” Frank said.

“You eventually become pretty close with the residents because it’s as if they are a neighbour or a relative.

“In the end, it’s a job where you are out there helping. I like doing things for people, that’s the bottom line I think.”

Aged Care Employee Day (Wednesday 7 August) is an annual celebration recognising aged care employees and an opportunity to say thanks for the work they do.

“I feel like the community doesn’t hear enough about all the love and happy times that residents get to have.

“I think it’s important as team members that we help reassure residents that they aren’t any trouble or a burden to anyone.

“The team members here also all know each other really well, we get along and it’s good to come to work with that sort of environment.”

As a Personal Care Worker, Frank now works with Walkerville residents helping with activities, social events and other general care needs.

“I don’t think a lot of people know what our roles involve but I think it’s important to have days like Aged Care Employee Day to show people that we are doing something very valuable to the community and for the people living here.

“This job, like any job has its challenges but it’s definitely worth it and it’s one you could do forever!”
