Centenarian thanks life on the land for 100th birthday

Bolton Clarke Home and Community Support client Kathleen has raised a teacup for her 100th birthday – and she says it’s all thanks to a positive mindset and healthy diet.

The newest member of Bolton Clarke’s Centenarian Club is the perfect example of ageing well, living at home and still spending much of her time in the garden.

“I grew up in the Berry area on a farm and I was one of nine kids – I was probably a little brat but there was no trouble to get into because we were out of town,” Kathleen said.

“We had no lights, no phone, nothing – just candles and kerosene lamps.

“It was the war time when I finished school and I was in the land army doing did things like growing potatoes and sewing, then I worked at a guesthouse for essential servicemen.”

With the support of her Bolton Clarke team, Kathleen has continued her love for growing fresh produce and tending to the land as she has throughout her life, while having her family just around the corner.

“I have one surviving sister, five children, 15 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

“Support at home means a lot to me because I can stay close to my family.

“I get help with the lawn and it enables me to continue to move around and work in the garden, even though I’m much slower than I used to be.”

Celebrating her birthday on 19th February with her family and friends, Kathleen says that while there is no secret to living for a century, she does think there are a few things you can do to lead a happy life.

“I didn’t think I would live to 100, even when I was 99!

“My advice would be to accept the things you cannot change and look after your health by eating well.”

When asked whether she will keep the party going for her 100th Kathleen responded: “No way! It better be back to normal now or else I won’t make it to 101!”
